Jane, a single mom Jane is a single mom who works the night shift as a fork lift driver. She is the sole wage earner for her family of two children and her grandson. In late April Jane developed an eye infection. She waited for a few days as things became growingly worse. "I wasn’t getting paid until Friday, and I had already spent my money on rent, utilities, and food. I don’t have insurance because I can’t afford it, so I had to borrow money from my friend. I went to the ER and was given eye drops that cost me $60." Perhaps $60 does not seem like an astronomical price to some of us, but it is a terrific cost to someone struggling to make ends meet. "A free clinic would be so helpful to me and others who work but can’t afford insurance for themselves or their families. I can’t afford to be unhealthy because I have a family to support. But, it would be nice to have somewhere to go for those times when I do get sick."
